Museums at Lanzarote have mostly have been built by Cesar Manrique. He can be dubbed as the father of modern Lanzarote. It is part his hard word work and dedication that Lanzarote offers several museums and art galleries, places to learn about the island’s culture.

In the other part one has to mention that the residents of Lanzarote have great respect, concern and dedication in promoting the island’s cultural development. This is reflected in the museums, centre and galleries making Lanzarote a major cultural centre of the Canary Islands.

Lanzarote’s has a variety of heritage and rich legacy with a long list of works and monuments, castles, convents, aristocratic and religious houses. Its museums and art galleries display a variety of artistic styles and manifestations.

Museo del Mar



It is also known by its name the Fort of San Gabriel in the Arrecife city centre. The fort was constructed to protect the islands against pirates. The fort´s structure is made of wood, iron and bronze reinforcements with artillery guns for protection. It was built in the 15th century. This castle also houses the History museum.

Currently it is a marine museum. The fort even though built strongly to defend could not resist the strong attack by the invaders in early part of the 16th century.

Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo

This is located in the Fort of San Jose. Like the name suggests this museum built in 1975 contains modern art objects. This museum was built under the personal supervision of Cesar Manrique. The Castle museum is air conditioned.

Punto de Encuentro con el Arte

It depicts the works of art by artists of Lanzarote mainly and by artist’s paintings of Lanzarote.

Casa de la Cultura Agustín de la Hoz

This is the cultural museum located in the capital Arrecife. It was refurbished in 2008 after about 18 months of restoration work.

This cultural centre organizes several events throughout the year. These events are important as they are a platform for discussion for students, intellectuals, and the general public in large.

Centro Insular de Cultura “El Almacén

The Centro Insular warehouse is built on two nineteenth-century houses. The museum are representative of the local architecture of Arrecife.

Since the early 1900 ´s to the 1960s the building was home to the School of Arts and Crafts. In 1973 it was acquired by the artist César Manrique.

After some modifications, Manrique opened in 1974 a refurbished museum. In 1989 César Manrique sold this back to the Cabildo of Lanzarote. It depicts works of Lanzarote´s culture.

Arrecife Airport Museum, Arrecife

Located at the airport itself. It is a museum that depicts the history of aviation in the island. It is a small museum but pretty interesting.
