The Yaiza Ayutamiento (City Council) was forced to restrict access to the Papagayo beach on Sunday 16th Aug 2020. A large number persons with vehicles reached on sunday morning to spend the day on this lovely beach.

The city council took this measure to maintain safety during COVID times. The local police in addition enforced social distancing measures.

Official sources say that an estimated 1,500 vehicles accumulated in a short time, which means that taking an average of two people per car, around 3,000 people came. After this no more vehicles were allowed to enter the parking area.

The Official in charge of the Beach Mr Angel Dominguez informed that the City Council took the rare measure of restricting access to the very popular Cove of Playa Mujeres. The Lanzarote authorities have been proactively working to prevent the spread of the disease as Lanzarote is advocating for visits by foreign tourist as a safe holiday destination.
